The demand for lip enhancement procedures has sky-rocketed over the past five years. Some attribute this trend to social media and celebrity culture, many of our Instagram feeds are filled with images of perfectly plumped pouts. How can you trust that you’ll get a result you’ll love if you’re interested in lip filler?
#1 – The Lip Flip
You want your lips to look a little fuller, but you just don’t feel ready for filler. The Lip Flip may be the perfect dress rehearsal to a future lip enhancement with filler. This recently popular technique can be done as a stand-alone service or combined with dermal filler to boost your results.
The goal of the Lip Flip is to avert your upper lip, subtly allowing for a fuller and smoother appearance. A tiny amount of Botox/neuromodulator is superficially placed into the muscle near the lip border. This muscle, called Orbicularis Oris, is responsible for the pursing action of the mouth. When relaxed, it allows your upper lip to softly flip upward exposing more of the pink surface area of your lip. This effect makes lips without filler look instantly fuller and gives an extra pop to a full lip enhancement.
#2 – Plump up the Volume
Dermal fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane are injected into soft tissues to create instant volume. Comprised of linked molecules of hyaluronic acid, or HAs, that are found naturally in our bodies. HAs function by attracting water from surrounding tissues to creating a “plumping effect.” This hydrophilic quality makes HA fillers a safe and effective option to plump the body of your lips, restoring the balance between your upper and lower lip.
#3 – Enhance Your Cupid’s Bow
Using a small amount of dermal filler to accentuate the two peaks of your upper lip, or “Cupid’s Bow,” can achieve a beautiful result on most clients. This technique draws attention to the midsection of your lips and can give a more youthful, poutier appearance to your upper lip. Injectors can further enhance this technique by placing a tiny amount of filler into your philtrum as well to add further lift and support.
#4 – Define Your Border
As we age, our lips lose pigmentation, definition, and support. This change can easily be seen in the border of our lips, especially the upper lip. Where the pink part of our lips meet the skin of our face is called the vermillion border. When the border is replenished, the entire lip can look fuller and more pronounced. Injectors can inject filler into BOTH the vermillion border, and the body of the lip to achieve a natural and beautiful transformation.
#5 – Lose the Lines & Get a Lift
If you’re continually battling bleeding lipstick and feel like your mouth has a heavy, almost frowning appearance at the corners, you’ll love dermal filler for lip lines and lift. Often called “smoker’s lines”, these tiny vertical wrinkles are a result of collagen breakdown from repeated lip contractions. Soft, delicate dermal fillers are wonderful in these lines and can instantly smooth out the area above your lip. Most injectors will recommend treating these lines with Botox as well to soften the muscle contraction in this area and prolong the results of your filler.
The corners of your lips, also called the oral commissures, can also be enhanced with filler. Whether due to repeated facial movements or genetics, many people notice that the corners of their lips downturn over time. This change can make you look like you are frowning or upset. It can also pull down the lower face and make you appear older. Dermal filler, when placed into the corners of your mouth, can replace volume loss and reestablish the support structure that lifts the lips back up into a more youthful shape!
Although each one of these techniques may sound wonderful all on its own, an experienced injector will frequently combine several or ALL of these methods during a single lip enhancement! This will depend on the natural state of your lips, the overall balance of your facial features, and your desired outcome.
Whether you’re dreaming of full, pouty, glamourous lips, or you just want lips that are more defined and balanced, dermal fillers can be customized to meet your aesthetic goal!
