Collagen acts as a support structure for your skin, providing volume and shape to your face. With age, your skin’s natural collagen supply decreases, and you may start to notice your skin needs an extra boost to maintain resiliency and fullness. Activate your skin’s natural regenerative process with Sculptra® Aesthetic at Skin Artisans at Edina Plastic Surgery. This FDA-approved injectable helps replenish lost collagen to subtly and gradually restore facial volume.

Sculptra® Aesthetic is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) injectable. It is effective in treating fine lines, wrinkles and folds, but it also works as a facial volumizing agent. PLLA is a biocompatible, biodegradable and synthetic material that stimulates collagen production when it is absorbed by your body. A specialist injects Sculptra® Aesthetic within the deep dermis, where it begins the process of rebuilding and reinforcing your skin’s internal support structure. This provides gradual yet significant improvement in facial lines and folds and builds youthful volume back into your skin.

Through a series of treatments, Sculptra® Aesthetic restores more youthful-looking skin, providing results that can last up to two years.

Sculptra® Aesthetic addresses a problem that many other popular anti-aging procedures miss. Resurfacing procedures — like chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments — rejuvenate the surface of the skin to correct superficial imperfections like sun damage, fine lines and blemishes. Surgical procedures, like a facelift or neck lift, address excess fat and sagging skin for a smoother, tighter look. Toxins relax overactive muscles to minimize dynamic wrinkles. None of these options restores lost volume.

Sculptra® Aesthetic may be an ideal option if you:

  • Have lost and wish to replace substantial facial volume
  • Prefer that others cannot easily tell you have undergone a cosmetic treatment
  • Understand that the results will gradually materialize
  • Are seeking a long-lasting solution but do not want surgery
  • Would like to add a complementary treatment to your existing anti-aging regimen

Before we proceed with treatment, we require a consultation to make sure you can safely receive Sculptra® Aesthetic injections and will benefit from the procedure.

Sculptra® Aesthetic is used to correct facial wrinkles, folds and depressions. Our licensed injectors use it for:

  • General improvement of facial volume
  • Lines framing the mouth and chin (marionette lines)
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Deep folds between the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds)
  • A hollow appearance in the cheek area or temples
  • Softening bony cheekbones
  • Jawline contouring
  • Depressed scars

Collagen stimulators and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers both have a volumizing effect, but there are key differences in how they achieve it, when results appear and how long they last.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found naturally in our skin, eyes, joints and connective tissue. It has a very high capacity for attracting and retaining water. Together with collagen and elastin, it is essential for maintaining structure, volume, elasticity and hydration in our skin. Many popular dermal fillers, including Juvéderm® and Restylane®, use HA to create an immediate plumping effect in the injected area.

Hyaluronic acid fillers last various lengths of time, depending on the area where it is administered, and the type of filler used. No HA filler is permanent. Eventually, the body breaks down the product and the effects fade away. Injections must be repeated every six to 24 months to achieve long-lasting results. HA fillers can also be dissolved by injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Collagen stimulators like Sculptra® Aesthetic are newer products that address an underlying cause of facial aging, not just the visible symptoms. They don’t just fill — they work in the deeper tissues to increase collagen growth, thereby restoring volume and skin elasticity. Because collagen stimulators rely on an organic process of the body, results are slower to appear than they are with dermal fillers. However, the results also tend to be more natural and longer-lasting.

We offer a variety of injectables at Skin Artisans because they address different needs. One of our licensed injectors will help you decide which one is most suitable for your goals.

Virtually no preparation is needed before a Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment. During your consultation, please advise your injector of any medications, supplements, medical conditions, previous injections or other procedures that could impact your treatment. Once your injector has determined you’re a good candidate and established realistic expectations, you can proceed with treatment.

Sculptra® Aesthetic is a relatively simple and comfortable treatment. Your injector may use a small amount of anesthetic to maximize your comfort, then administer the injections with a small needle. After your injections, your injector will massage the area to help distribute the Sculptra® Aesthetic evenly and prevent the formation of lumps or nodules. The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.

There is no prescribed downtime after Sculptra® Aesthetic injections. Swelling may occur after your treatment and usually subsides within a few days. Other Sculptra® Aesthetic side effects you may experience include redness, tenderness, bruising, itching, lumps and injection site pain. You may return to your normal level of activity as soon as you feel comfortable with your appearance. Your injector may recommend avoiding excessive UV exposure and massaging the treated area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days after your appointment.

Sculptra® Aesthetic can appear to have a plumping effect soon after it’s injected. Don’t be surprised to see this disappear as any post-treatment swelling resolves. The true results of Sculptra® Aesthetic need time to develop. As the process of collagen replacement occurs, you will see visible results develop gradually. Initial results are typically visible one month following your first injection session. The Sculptra® Aesthetic regimen delivers its full effects with an average of three sessions scheduled over the course of a few months.

One of the reasons Sculptra® Aesthetic is so popular is that it can last up to two years. One maintenance appointment per year is recommended to ensure your rejuvenated appearance is properly preserved.
