Unless you’re one of the tiny percentage of people genetically blessed with flawless skin, preserving a youthful-looking, healthy complexion takes some work. Proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, and excellent stress management skills are just a few building blocks of beautiful skin. Each year, millions of people also turn to BOTOX® Cosmetic to improve the appearance of expression lines on their faces and, essentially, turn back the clock on aging skin. While the effects of BOTOX® are temporary, there are steps you can take to prolong your results between appointments. Here are four tips that may maximize the longevity of the world’s most popular wrinkle-reducing treatment!

#1 – Get injected by a fully licensed and qualified Injection Specialist

It’s often said that your BOTOX® results are only as good as the qualifications and experience of the person injecting it. An Injection Specialist with the appropriate credentials and training will understand the ideal placement of your BOTOX® injections and the proper dosing to full correction for each site to deliver long-lasting, beautiful results! They will also help you design the ideal treatment interval to address both static and dynamic lines year round. Look for a provider who is a Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner with additional training in cosmetic injectables and a background in medical aesthetics, like ALL of the Injection Specialists at Skin Artisans!

#2 – Stay hydrated

The condition and appearance of your skin are a direct reflection of your lifestyle. People who eat well, exercise, stay hydrated, and manage their stress well will have a healthier complexion and younger-looking skin over time.

Adequate water intake plays a vital role in the longevity of your BOTOX® results. Why? The skin is the largest organ of the human body, but it is also the last to benefit from the water we drink. If we aren’t consuming enough water during the day, our skin will become dehydrated, and fine lines will appear more prominent. Devitalized, thirsty skin will cancel out the visual benefits of your BOTOX®. Make a goal of consuming at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day to ensure your skin is adequately hydrated and can support your BOTOX® results for longer.

#3 – Use a physician-grade skincare regimen

Getting quarterly BOTOX® treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and NOT using professional skincare is like going to the dentist for a professional cleaning twice a year and not brushing your teeth in between appointments! If you want your BOTOX® to last as long as possible, you must support your results with a customized physician-grade skincare regimen. Work with a Skin Artisans Advanced Practice Esthetician to get set up with the following products to best support your BOTOX® results:

A gentle cleanser to ensure that all makeup and debris is removed from your skin daily.

#4 – Supplement with Zinc before your appointment

According to a clinical trial in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, supplementing with zinc was reported to extend the results of BOTOX® by up to 30% in 92% of patients. In these cases, zinc was taken twice daily (50 mg) for four days before a BOTOX® appointment. This increase in the longevity of results might be due to the fact that the botulinum toxin is a member of a class of enzymes that requires zinc to function. It’s important to note that zinc is not guaranteed to extend your BOTOX® results due to bio-individuality. Still, with a large percentage of the population being slightly zinc deficient, it may be worth discussing with your Skin Artisans Injection Specialist!
