Melasma is a widespread and stubborn skin condition characterized by dark, brown patches on sun-exposed areas—predominately the face. Although these discolorations are not harmful, they can make the skin appear uneven and cause frustration to those suffering from Melasma. Common triggers for Melasma include fluctuating hormones, birth control pills, UV and visible light exposure, and even extreme heat. Melasma is frequently called the “mask of pregnancy” because of its prevalence in women going through the hormonal flux of pregnancy. Although there is no cure for Melasma, the condition can be dramatically improved and effectively managed with skincare products and treatments offered at Skin Artisans, like The Melasma Peel!

What is The Melasma Peel?

The Melasma Peel is a chemical peel in the form of a mask. It is designed to lighten Melasma and improve the skin tone of ANY skin color. Its formulation is specifically compounded to include some of the most potent skin brighteners, lighteners, pigment suppressors, and exfoliators that combat skin discolorations. These include:

Hydroquinone: Hydroquinone helps lighten any dark patches of skin (hyperpigmentation, Melasma, “liver spots,” “age spots,” freckles) caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone medicine, or injury to the skin. It works by blocking the process in the skin that leads to pigment or melanin production.

Retinoic Acid: Retinoic Acid is a form of Vitamin A that helps lift away dead, damaged skin cells and improve skin’s texture, clarity, and overall tone.

Kojic Acid: Kojic acid is a plant extract that works by blocking tyrosine from forming, which then prevents melanin production. Decreased melanin production has a lightening effect on the skin.

Azelaic Acid: Azelaic acid is also a tyrosinase inhibitor, which helps to prevent and treat hyperpigmentation on the skin and even out your overall skin tone.

How does The Melasma Peel work?

A consultation with a Skin Artisans Advanced Practice Esthetician is required before receiving The Melasma Peel. At your first appointment, the blended mask will be applied to your skin by your Esthetician. She will instruct you on how long to leave the mask on depending on your skin type, skin color, and degree of pigmentation. After you have removed the mask at home, you will proceed to use the skincare products given to you by your Esthetician. These products are included in the price of The Melasma Peel.

You will have moderate flaking and peeling that begins around three days after your peel and lasts for 3-5 days. After 7-10 days, you will notice skin that is significantly more even in tone and bright and smooth! Over the next 6-8 weeks, you will see a dramatic reduction in brown spots and improvements to the overall clarity of your complexion. Wear a daily SPF and use the products recommended by your Esthetician to maintain and enhance your results!
