The formation of scars can occur for many reasons, but one thing is for certain, their appearance can range from something we simply learn to live with to something that severely impacts our self-esteem and confidence. Before treating any scar, we must first identify how the scar formed. Skin can scar for several reasons, including:
- An injury or cut to the skin, such as a deep laceration or dog bite.
- Post-surgical scarring from an incision used in C-section, breast lift, or other elective and non-elective surgeries.
- Cases of severe pustular, or cystic acne that damage skin’s collagen and elastin matrix resulting in acne scarring.
- Illnesses, such as Chicken Pox which, like acne, can damage your skin’s deeper layers, resulting in ice pick scarring.
When skin is injured, your body’s wound healing response is activated. White blood cells rush to the site of injury to help heal the area. In doing so, collagen and elastin can be destroyed, as in acne scarring. As a wound begins to heal, collagen and elastin may also build up and thicken, as they do at the site of an incision or cut. Because inflammation is present during this healing process, your skin’s pigment production may also be triggered, causing a scar to eventually turn a deep red, purple, or brown. Non-surgical treatments, like those offered at Skin Artisans, can help improve the appearance of scars by lightening and blending their pigmentation, decreasing the depth of a scar, and resurfacing the scar to a flatter, more smooth texture.
