Are you bothered by the appearance of enlarged pores on your nose and t-zone area? A larger pore structure can be frustrating, especially when applying makeup, but it can also make you feel insecure when speaking up close with others or liking how your skin appears in photos. Contrary to popular belief, there is no magic product or treatment that can “close” our pores, but with the right skincare products and professional treatments, we can make them appear smaller and more refined.

Enlarged pores are generally caused by genetics and aging. If you were born with an oilier skin type, the overproduction of sebum (oil) by your sebaceous glands will result in a larger pore opening. This opening is called the “ostium.” If you suffer from acne and your pores become congested with excess oil and dead skin cells, this opening can appear even larger.

When our skin ages, we experience a decrease in the rate at which it produces collagen and elastin. These components give our pores support and strength, especially the opening. As collagen breaks down, the ostium begins to loosen and lose its tight form. This makes the pore appear larger and explains why even older people with dry skin can still experience enlarged pores.

The best treatments for enlarged pores involve keeping the pore itself clear of congestion, regulating oil production on oilier skin types, and introducing skincare ingredients and treatments that stimulate collagen and elastin to restore the volume and firmness to our skin and pore structure.

When you partner with a Skin Artisans Advanced Practice Esthetician, she will help you identify the cause of your enlarged pores and recommend a customized treatment plan that may include:

  • Physician-grade skincare that contains salicylic acid to keep your skin clear of congestion, ingredients that regulate oil production and normalize cell proliferation, and retinol to stimulate collagen and elastin and enhance cell turnover.
  • DiamondGlow™ & HydraFacial® to exfoliate skin, provide gentle extraction work to keep pores clear, and infuse skin with corrective serums.
  • SkinPen® Microneedling to encourage collagen and elastin production and restore support and strength to the pore and ostium.
  • Sciton MicroLaserPeel® & ProFracional™ to provide light to deep laser resurfacing that invigorates collagen and elastin production and significantly smooths the surface of your skin, making pores appear smaller and tighter.

Collagen and elastin production begins to slow in our skin in our late twenties. To preserve the health and appearance of your pores, it’s essential to introduce skincare products and treatments that keep them clean and clear and stimulate the production of these vital skin components. Schedule a complimentary consultation with a Skin Artisans Advanced Practice Esthetician to discuss how they can help you improve the appearance of your enlarged pores today and keep you on track for healthy, gorgeous skin in the future!
