Enlarged pores are generally caused by genetics and aging. If you were born with an oilier skin type, the overproduction of sebum (oil) by your sebaceous glands will result in a larger pore opening. This opening is called the “ostium.” If you suffer from acne and your pores become congested with excess oil and dead skin cells, this opening can appear even larger.
When our skin ages, we experience a decrease in the rate at which it produces collagen and elastin. These components give our pores support and strength, especially the opening. As collagen breaks down, the ostium begins to loosen and lose its tight form. This makes the pore appear larger and explains why even older people with dry skin can still experience enlarged pores.
