Kybella®

Kybella® is a non-surgical injectable for reducing moderate to severe fat on the upper neck, otherwise known as a “double chin.” This is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition that impacts a broad range of adults, including both women and men.

A double chin occurs because of several factors, such as aging, genetics and weight gain. The area is often resistant to diet and exercise. Having a double chin can detract from an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance – leading to an older and heavier look.

The Kybella® injection, approved by the FDA, contains a naturally occurring molecule that melts the fat. It is identical to the deoxycholic acid that is produced in the body to helps the body absorb fats. Kybella® is a cytolytic drug, which when injected into tissue physically destroys the cell membrane. When properly injected into submental fat, the drug destroys fat cells occurring below the chin – with notable results that our patients appreciate.

What to expect after your treatment:

  • Swelling is normal and expected as your body’s natural inflammatory response and clean-up crew” are at work as Kybella® begins to destroy unwanted fat cells. If your treatment area was on your face/neck, expect moderate to severe swelling. After day 3 the swelling will begin to improve. Each day, swelling will continue to lessen up to 2-3 weeks after. Apply ice packs for 5-15 minutes periodically through the next 48-72 hours.
  • Bruising is normal and expected. If your treatment was performed on the body expect moderate bruising. This will resolve just as a typical bruise would.
  • Pain and tenderness is normal. Over-the-counter Tylenol will help alleviate any discomfort. Avoid aspirin, Advil, ibuprofen, Motrin or Aleve, as they could increase bruising.
  • Other side effects that will gradually resolve include: numbness and hardness (averages 4-6 weeks)
  • Results with Kybella® most often begin to appear at 4-6 weeks after treatment.
  • Full results expected at 12 weeks after treatment
